TalkCity — The digital side of bars and parties in BH.

The problem

The places already exist. Their digital side did not.

Belo Horizonte has no shortage of bars, pubs, parties and live music venues. What did not exist was a digital layer on top of them — a way for the people in the same place to recognise each other.

TalkCity does not replace the bar or the party. It adds a layer on top: whoever is there through the app appears to the others who are there too — and only to them.

And knowing what is on was missing too. The information exists, but it is scattered: each place posts its line-up on its own Instagram, and whoever follows twenty bars misses half of it.

How it works

Three steps, and none of them is filling out a profile.

See where people are

The map shows how many TalkCity people are in each neighborhood and each place, right now. Tap a bubble and drill down to the bar.

Check in

Once there, you check in through the app and start appearing to the people who checked in there too — and only to them. It lasts at most 6 hours.

Talk

Send a Talk to whoever is at the same place, and widen your circle.

There is no way to look someone up inside the app

TalkCity has no profiles. The only way to appear is by choosing to check in at a bar or a club. And it does not last: it ends after a while, or as soon as you walk away.

No algorithm in between. These are the places you chose, not the ones someone decided to show you.

How is the place right now?

The people who checked in report how the place is: how busy, tables, line and music. It takes under ten seconds and nobody has to answer everything.

Only people who are there can answer. To say Nicolau is packed, you have to be inside Nicolau.
It expires fast. What was true at 9pm is not true at midnight: reports expire, and the most recent ones weigh more.
It is not a bar rating. Nothing becomes history or an average. It is the now, and only that.

Privacy

Nobody knows where you go.

Your location is read at the moment you walk into a place, to confirm you are there. There is no location history and no reading while the app is closed.
You only appear where you walked in, to people in that same place. Outside of it, nobody sees anything.
You can walk in invisible, choose who sees you, block and report.
Your presence ends when you leave, or in 6 hours — whichever comes first.
